Halloween at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando looks very different than Halloween at Disneyland or Halloween at Walt Disney World! Universal Studios Hollywood's ticketed event, Halloween Horror Nights, is recommended only for ages 13 and up and caters strongly to a teenager and adult crowd with Hollywood-style special effects in haunted houses, and scare actors that roam the parks with other horrific encounters. This is a popular event and guests will have the best experience if they go in with a Halloween Horror Nights strategy in mind.

For adults and teens looking to enjoy the spookier version of Halloween, Halloween Horror Nights is a great option. Each year this ticketed event gets more and more popular and haunted houses have included popular film franchises like Stranger Things, Last of Us, Chucky, classic monsters like Frankenstein, and the Jordan Peele films. This popular event brings large crowds and a different strategy is needed to tackle the event most efficiently! Here is my strategy for attending the event plus the best tips on surviving the crowds at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Best Halloween Horror Night Tips

Halloween Horror Night Guide

Here are all my best Halloween Horror Night tips that take into account how to have the best experience seeing all the haunted houses, scare zones, entertainment, and more at Universal Studios Hollywood.

  • Buy Express Pass– This is a crucial step for having the best experience. This is one instance where the money is always absolutely worth it, the lines for all these haunted houses get very, very long. You will not be able to do everything without Express Pass.
  • Buy Early Entry– If you're splurging on Express Pass, you might as well purchase Early Entry too and enter the park at 5:30pm instead of 7pm so you can start on the popular houses in the Lower Lot.
  • Wear Comfortable Shoes- You will do a lot of walking at this event, more so than you do on a regular day at Universal Studios Hollywood. Nearly all the haunted houses are located in the backstage area of the park which means more walking as some of the houses require you to walk pretty far into this backstage area!
  • Eat Before the Event- While Halloween Horror Nights has its own special dining experiences, you should plan on eating a big meal before it starts. Like any special event at a theme park, you will have a busy night and may encounter long lines for food! Best to eat beforehand and have a lighter meal later.
  • Take Your Time in the Haunted Houses- Although it can be challenging, especially if you're scared, take your time walking through the haunted houses. The timing of the jump scares and appearances from scare actors are often coordinated to each separate group, if you are following the group in front too closely, you may miss out on some parts of the house. Take your time, walk at a slow pace, and really take it in.
  • Go Last for Best Jump Scares- Being the person who walks through the haunted houses first might actually be less scary than going second. We found that many jump scares were timed to hear the first person walking past, and once they jumped out it was really at the second person! What a fun twist that is.
  • Don't Be Scared- Well, easier said than done but if you're nervous just remember that many folks who work in haunted houses were once theater kids. And theater kids can't be that scary, right? I had many theater kid friends when I was young and what did they all do when not acting in plays? Work in haunted houses! Scare actors also can't touch you- not in the haunted houses or the scare zones. Take a deep breath and have fun!
  • Prepare for Loud Noises/Smells- The haunted houses are all extremely loud and can include flashing lights and strong smells. If you are sensitive to this type of stimulation, it's good to be prepared. Some guests even bring a mask to wear in the houses with the smells if this is something that may bother them. And some of the houses have very strong smells!
  • Bring Your Teens– If you have teens who won't be scared by haunted houses, this event is a must. Being a teenager can be a hard age as they're between childhood and adulthood and so many experiences do not cater to them. Halloween Horror Nights is a perfect event many teens will love, we saw so many having a blast!
  • Leave the Young Kids at Home– Halloween Horror Nights is not recommended for anyone under 13 and I think this is a perfect recommendation. We did not see one single kid under the age of 13 at this event and it's good advice to follow, most kids would be terrified by this event. And maybe some of us adults too!

Is Express Pass Worth It for Halloween Horror Nights?

Halloween Universal

While I don't believe Express Pass is always necessary at Universal Studios Hollywood, you can read my full thoughts on that in our Express Pass guide, my opinion changes a bit when you consider the crowds for Halloween Horror Nights.

The same two versions of Express Pass for Halloween Horror Nights are offered: once per use and unlimited. Express Pass can be used for all the haunted houses, the Terror Tram, priority viewing for the Purge show in the Waterworld theater plus the open attractions.

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood is an extremely popular event amongst locals and tourists alike. Since this is a popular event for folks who live in the area, you will see much larger crowds on weekends than on weekdays. You can read more about crowds at Universal Studios Hollywood in our crowd calendar.

Halloween Horror Nights Chucky

You will also see much larger crowds in the month of October than in September so if you are visiting in October, I would highly recommend purchasing Express Pass. If you are visiting in September on a weekday then you might be able to get by without Express Pass but keep in mind that you won't be able to experience all the houses. If you are visiting on a weekend, I would highly recommend it in either September or October.

I had regular Express Pass during my most recent Halloween Horror Nights experience which was on a Friday night in September and so we saw very high crowd levels during our night.  We saw wait times average around three hours for these houses throughout the night! I was able to experience every house using Express Pass even the most popular houses. Some houses had a three-hour wait in the regular line but with Express we waited about 20 minutes which was a huge difference!

If you do not have Express Pass, it may not be possible to experience all the houses so that is one big reason I feel that Express Pass is worth it if the houses are a big priority for your group. Otherwise, you will spend a large chunk of your night spent in line which is not a great way to spend the evening! It's an investment in a better experience and I do feel it is necessary for most evenings at Halloween Horror Nights. We were able to take our time going to all the houses while still experiencing the scare zones, Terror Tram, and the new Purge show in the Waterworld theater. And we also rode a few rides too!

Is Halloween Horror Nights Early Entry Worth It?

Halloween Horror Night Photo Op

Universal Studios Hollywood also offers an Early Entry pass that you can purchase in addition to your regular admission. This Early Entry ticket allows you access to the event 90 minutes earlier so guests enter at 5:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. During Early Entry, all the lower lot houses will be available.

If you have Express Pass, you may want to wait and see what the posted wait time is before automatically using it. If you can use the regular line then you could use your pass to come back later and do it again if you want!

During our experience with Early Entry, by 6 p.m. both Lower Lot houses had around an hour-long line but the Express Pass line was a walk-on for all the houses during the time. This is also helpful because the Express Pass lines will grow a bit during the evening although we never experienced one longer than 20 minutes.

Using Express Pass and Early Entry, we had all four houses in the Lower Lot done before 7 p.m. and also had time to ride The Mummy twice in a row.

Since Early Entry is so cheap, ranging around $15-25 per ticket, I think it is easily worth it. If you do not plan on purchasing Express Pass, I would say this ticket is essential!

Halloween Horror Nights Strategy

Scare Zone Halloween Horror Night

If you purchase Express Pass, my best advice for a Halloween Horror Nights strategy is to start in the Lower Lot and slowly work your way around the Upper Lot when finished. The beauty of Express Pass is a Halloween Horror Nights strategy is not often needed as long as you move deliberately around the park rather than zig-zagging or going out of your way.

For guests purchasing Early Entry, starting in the Lower Lot is necessary since those are the available houses during the event.

For guests not purchasing Early Entry, they may want to do the opposite and start in the Upper Lot! Rather than go right to the Lower Lot which will already have houses with waits, go straight to the other houses. Based on my observations from our night at Halloween Horror Nights, guests without Early Entry should go straight to the Chucky house which is located at the end of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in the backstage area. Do the upper lot first and then save the lower lot for last.

If a guest decides to not purchase Express Pass or Early Entry, I recommend monitoring the wait times in the Universal Studios Hollywood app to zig-zag throughout the park as wait times drop. I noticed that most of the crowd seems to follow a similar pattern, some houses will reach high waits and others will drop as the crowds move around. Watch the app for the lowest times!

You will naturally experience the Scare Zones as you walk through the park so you don't necessarily have to plan on incorporating them into your evening.

Tips on Seeing The Purge at Halloween Horror Nights

Halloween Horror Nights Purge

As for The Purge, wait times for the houses might actually go down during this show which takes place in the Waterworld area so this could be a time to prioritize popular houses instead of seeing the show. Without Express Pass, it simply won't be possible to do everything so this is a moment of deciding which is the bigger priority. That being said, this is a great show and is worth the time to see!

The last hour of the event may see lower wait times as many guests may begin to clear out before then. But keep in mind, unlike other theme park events, the crowds will mainly be adults and teenagers and most will likely stay until the end.

Overall, I believe the best Halloween Horror Nights strategy is to purchase Express Pass and Early Entry but it can be done without Express if you plan ahead. Just know that without Express Pass, it's unlikely you will see everything! Prioritize your top houses and plan the order you want to tackle them as you monitor wait times in the app.

Which Halloween Horror Nights Ticket Is Best?

Chucky HHN

Halloween Horror Nights is an extremely popular event at Universal Studios Hollywood. This event is a popular Halloween tradition with locals in the area like annual passholders and tourists visiting the parks to celebrate Halloween.

Halloween has become an increasingly popular time for families to enjoy vacations, especially with the numerous Fall Breaks that are offered at local schools in California, Arizona, and Utah. On our Universal Studios Hollywood crowd calendar, we note that a lot of dates in October has some of the busiest of the year.

With that in mind, this is one event where I feel that purchasing Universal Express Pass is crucial to getting the most out of your night. Halloween Horror Nights technically runs from 7PM to 1-2AM but an Early Entry ticket can get you in the event at 5:30PM. Express Pass will allow you to use the shorter Express Pass line for all the haunted houses and other experiences. So you should consider purchasing both Express Pass and an Early Entry ticket.

It is not uncommon for popular houses at Halloween Horror Nights to each two to three hour wait times. It is worth it to spend that extra money to have a great experience and avoid hour-long waits.

Whether you do the early 2PM ticket is up to your group but keep in mind that Halloween Horror Nights is a long event and you do not want to be tired out by the time it begins. The main perk of the 2PM ticket is the access to Super Nintendo World from 7PM-10PM. When monitoring wait times during the event, we noticed that the wait time for the brand new Bowser attraction was nonexistent meaning that the attraction was basically a walk on most of the night.

Another great option is the R.I.P. Tour (more on this below) which is a Halloween Horror Nights VIP tour. This tour includes special VIP access to all the experiences plus additional scare actor experiences only reserved for R.I.P. Tour guests. You can easily enjoy the entire event and be done early enough to go enjoy a few attractions with your unlimited Express Pass which is included in the tour.

Frequent Fear Passes

The Frequent Fear Passes for Halloween Horror Nights allow guests to visit more than once and bundle their days to save money. There are a few different options for the Frequent Fear Passes that allow guests to visit multiple times, or every event, throughout the season.

Frequent Fear Pass

  • Starts at $179 per person
  • Allows guests to pick any night for their first visit and revisit up to 30 times on select dates.

Ultimate Fear Pass

  • Starts at $299 per person
  • Guests can visit any night for their first visit and attend every night of Halloween Horror Nights
  • No blackout dates

Tour Options for Halloween Horror Nights

RIP Tour Halloween Horror Nights

Guests can also opt for a VIP walking experience called the R.I.P. Tour which includes:

  • Exclusive Universal Backlot Halloween experience with private VIP trolley transportation.
  • Universal Express UNLIMITED access to all houses and available rides.
  • Gourmet dinner in the private VIP dining room (alcoholic beverages excluded).
  • Special interactive themed photo opportunities with a scare actor.
  • Reserved VIP seating at a live show (while on the tour with R.I.P. Tour Guide).
  • Complimentary valet Parking (one vehicle).
  • Special VIP entrance to Universal Studios Hollywood where you will receive your commemorative “R.I.P.” credentials and lanyard.

Book early since R.I.P. Tour tickets may sell out. (Pricing varies by date and tour selection, subject to availability). The event begins at 7 pm. R.I.P. Tour tickets include Early Event Admission to select houses beginning at 6 pm, subject to availability, cancellation, and change.

R.I.P. Tour tickets are for shared tours of parties up to 12 guests per tour. Private R.I.P. Tours are available for groups up to 12 guests and include an exclusive guide for the group. Please call 818-622-0251 to book a Private R.I.P. Tour.

If you're looking to splurge on your Halloween Horror Nights experience, this is the best way to do it. The tour starts at $419 per person and includes your admission to the event.

The Purge: Dangerous Waters Show

Halloween Horror Nights review

There is a special show created just for Halloween Horror Nights that takes place in the same area where Waterworld takes place!

The Purge: Dangerous Waters, focuses on The Purge movies where crime is legal for 12 hours as part of the government's annual Purge. The story of this show focuses on a race against time as a politician escapes to an island to avoid The Purge. The island is then overrun by Purgers and then a fight ensues with action sequences, lighting, laser effects, high fall fire burns, and massive explosions.

The Purge: Dangerous Waters Review

Halloween Horror Nights

This show is a great addition to the Halloween Horror Nights lineup! The show makes great use of similar amazing stunt scenes, explosions, and visual effects we see during the Waterworld show but with the extra twist of horror. This show does involve bloody fights and gruesome special effects which is something you don't often see in a theme park show. Even though you know that's the drill with Halloween Horror Nights, it took us by surprise when the first death happened and we saw blood fly in the air! But it's a perfect fit for the event and it made the entire experience far more entertaining.

Halloween Horror Nights Purge

The storyline Universal Studios Hollywood created for the show worked well for the shorter run time and was easy to follow even if you have not seen the Purge films. The show takes place multiple times throughout the night with the second showing at 11PM being one of the most popular times.

Dark Arts at Hogwarts

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is included in the event with Death Eaters roaming Hogsmeade with stunning effects of fog, smoke, and green lights along with lighting up Hogwarts castle with images of the Dark Arts from the films.

All the rides in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter will be open as well during the event. You can find a path marked off for the Death Eaters near the Hogwarts Express train. This experience is more of a walk-through than just Death Eaters roaming the land so if you want to experience Hogsmeade without jump scares, never fear, it's secure in its own area.

Terror Tram

HHN Terror Tram

Each year Halloween Horror Nights features a newly themed Terror Tram which is essentially the Studio Tour tram that takes guests to a special scare zone area in the Backlot. The tram itself is part of the experience and takes about 30 minutes to ride.

Guests are taken to the backlot and typically exit the tram through the set areas of the Studio Tour to witness moments from popular horror films and see notorious monsters. Because of the use of the tram for the Terror Tram, the regular Studio Tour does not operate during Halloween Horror Nights.

Halloween Horror Nights Scare Zones

Scare Zone Halloween Horror Night

The scare zones are similar to the jump scares in the houses but are smaller and in more contained areas of Universal. The scare zones are just as popular as the mazes and are a must to complete once you've finished the top haunted houses you're interested in. You will end up walking through most of these on the way to the haunted houses.

Scare Zones Universal

Our experience with the scare zones was great, the scare actors are so devoted! They will target you if you jump easily, run, or scream so keep that in mind! My son and I aren't necessarily ‘screamers' so they didn't spend too much time on us. Although there was one moment when I was studying my phone looking at the Universal app and turned to see one of the scare actors breathing down my neck- that time I did scream! Many guests worry about this part but honestly, it's more fun than scary and you can choose to avoid walking through the zones if you want. But we saw plenty of teenagers having fun being chased and running into the Starbucks only to come to find the same scare actor waiting to surprise them!

Halloween Horror Nights Haunted Houses

Haunted houses are the main form of entertainment for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood. These haunted houses/mazes each focus on a separate theme which often coordinates with current popular films and franchises.

This is a haunted house like you've never experienced before with Hollywood-style special effects and wonderful scare actors to immerse you in scenes from these popular films. These houses are intense and stimulating to all the senses: they are often loud and may include flashing lights and strong smells that connect to the scenes. There are many jump scares in all these houses and they vary in terms of how gruesome and horrific they can be.

Halloween Horror Nights Frequently Asked Questions

Universal Maze with Jason

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood and our answers to make sure you show up prepared.

What age range is best for Halloween Horror Nights?

I wouldn't recommend Halloween Horror Nights for anyone under the age of 13. But that's just a recommendation- your teenager may not be into horror and get terrified at some of the mazes. When experiencing the thrills at Halloween Horror Nights, it's common for scare actors to jump out at guests, and if you don't think your teenager would enjoy that then you may not want to attend. This will happen in the haunted houses too, they are loud, stimulating, and filled with jump scares. You will also see extremely gruesome imagery in these houses that 13 may be too young for even depending on your family's preferences.

Halloween Horror Nights are popular with locals ranging from teenagers to adults so you can expect to see large crowds at these events. I personally would leave the smaller kids at home! Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

How can I beat the crowds?

Your best starting point for beating the crowds at Halloween Horror Nights is to purchase your ticket online from Universal in advance and purchase Early Entry to enter the park at 530pm. Not all mazes are open at that time but the most popular ones tend to be allowing you to cross those off your list early.

We also recommend heading to the mazes first and saving some of the lower wait entertainment for later in the evening. If you're really worried about crowds, you can always buy the ticket with the Universal Express Pass to ensure lower wait times for your group.

Make sure you download the Universal Studios app so you can check current wait times for the mazes and scare zones during the event.

Which attractions are open during the event?

Not all Universal Studios Hollywood daytime attractions and areas are open during this event. The attractions that are open for guests looking to get a break from the frightful activities are:

  • Transformers 3-D
  • Revenge of the Mummy
  • Jurassic World
  • The Simpsons Ride
  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Flight of the Hippogriff

If you don't want to miss out on the rides that aren't open during Halloween Horror Nights, you may want to consider purchasing a regular daytime ticket too.

What are the rules for attending Universal's Halloween Horror Nights? Can I wear a costume?

No masks, costumes, or items that resemble weapons are allowed. No face paint is allowed although guests can get spooky face paint done during the event.

There are also rules for the mazes that state guests cannot record, take flash photos, bring laser pens or food/water into the maze. Most mazes are wheelchair and ECV accessible, contact Universal for more information on access.

You are not allowed to touch or harm the actors or line jump during the event.

There is no-reentry into the event so bring everything you need inside with you when you enter. This is especially important for guests to remember- no dipping out for a quick dinner on City Walk! You won't be allowed back in, no exceptions.

Halloween Horror Nights 2023 Houses Review

Halloween Horror Nights Stranger Things

The following details are from 2023 Halloween Horror Nights but give you a good idea of what to expect from our overview of the houses and the experiences themselves.

Stranger Things has returned to Halloween Horror Nights this year! This year's new Stranger Things haunted house focuses on season four with guests encountering the supernatural villain Vecna. The new Stranger Things house mirrors the supernatural terror of Season 4 “immersing guests in a heart-pounding experience alongside valiant characters from the series, including Eleven, Max, Eddie, and more.”

Guests find themselves on the front line of Vecna's attacks on Hawkins while traveling through different scenes including the Hawkins Lab, Creel House, and Vecna's chilling mindscape. Guests will encounter demobats and Vecna himself in the final showdown in his blood-red Mind Lair.

Stranger Things Halloween Horror Nights

Stranger Things Halloween Horror Nights Review

As a huge Stranger Things fan, this was my main interest in the event! I was not disappointed and each scene pays a lovely tribute to the fourth season of Stranger Things. Fans of Stranger Things will appreciate the house the most, but if you have not watched Stranger Things you may not always follow the story. The visual effects are still stunning regardless of your personal knowledge of Stranger Things.

My only disappointment is that the house did not feature the scene of Eddie playing “Master of Puppets” by Metallica in the Upside Down, I think this was a huge missed opportunity and one we were convinced we would see in the house- especially with that scene being present on so much of the merchandise. Despite that disappointment, this was a great house and is a good one to start for “beginners” at the event to warm up to the scarier houses.

NEW Last of Us House

This year's Halloween Horror Nights will feature “The Last of Us” based on the popular video game which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Guests can immersive themselves into this world of Infected and follow in the footsteps of Joel and Ellie as they encounter a fungal virus that turns humans into various forms of a new threat called the Infected.

Guests will encounter the Infected – Runners, Stalkers, and Clickers – along with The Hunters, a band of hostile humans, they will need to navigate the Pittsburgh Quarantine Zone, including iconic locations from the video game such as the creepy and desolate The Hotel Grand and a labyrinth of dark and dank tunnels, in a desperate attempt to escape and survive.

Last of Us House

“The Last of Us” was recently made into a popular television series which has only heightened the popularity of the game. This is easily one of the most popular haunted houses at Universal this year!

Last of Us Halloween Horror Nights Review

This was easily one of the best houses at Halloween Horror Nights this year. The Last of Us house is based on the video game, not the television show, but if you have seen the show then you will still understand most of it. The show is closely based on the game! But if you have not seen either, I don't think it matters one bit with this house as they did a fantastic job incorporating the general essence of any traditional zombie story. The zombies (known as Infected in Last of Us) were terrifying and the special effects used to bring these creatures to life were on par with the show. This is an absolute must, even if you are not a fan of the show. I would have done this house again if the line wouldn't have been so long!

The Exorcist: Believer

Halloween Horror Nights

This haunted house is inspired by Universal Pictures’ new horror film from Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Entertainment called The Exorcist: Believer. This new film hits theaters on October 6th.

In this new chapter, guests are transported to a street market in Haiti where an innocent purchase of a strange folk doll with three eyes leads to the opening of a demonic portal that awakens sinister spirits and leads to the disappearances of two 12-year-old girls in the U.S. The girls are found three days later with no memory and begin exhibiting unsettling behavior until it becomes clear that only an exorcism can save them.

The Exorcist: Believer Halloween Horror Nights Review

This house easily made my top list just due to the classic horror the Exorcist theme always delivers. The immersive quality in this house is fairly intense with it having some of the strongest smells we experienced in all the houses. There is one graphic scene with animals so be aware for those that do not like that sort of horror. This was an interesting house since it releases before the film actually does but you feel like you can follow the story fairly well especially since most are familiar with the general concept of the Exorcist. Overall, this was a terrifying house!

Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count

Halloween Horror Nights Chucky

This house is inspired by the USA & SYFY series and classic films. Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count is the star of his own haunted house for the first time. Chucky has been “mired in the agony of disrespect he feels from his peers” for not being taken seriously. This sadistic killer begins his quest to turn his haunted house into a living slaughterhouse by killing everyone who enters. The house itself includes a “kill count” as Chucky goes on his rampage which even includes the first “victim” as someone wearing a Universal Express pass!

Chucky Halloween Horror Nights Review

This haunted house rivals the Last of Us for the BEST Halloween Horror Nights this year. The Chucky house is filled with Chucky animatronics including the Bride of Chucky, Chucky's son, and even a larger-than-life Chucky. This house is so impressive because of these Chucky animatronics and the attention to detail to the legacy of Chucky as a horror movie icon. This house often had longer wait times than Last of Us, at one point we saw waits of over three hours!

Universal Monsters: Unmasked

Universal Monsters

Each year usually features a haunted house that focuses on classic Universal monsters. In this year's new haunted house “Universal Monsters: Unmasked” guests will visit infamous burial grounds filled with skeletal remains and sinister monsters. Within the Catacombs, guests will encounter Universal's most famous creatures like The Phantom of the Opera, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dr. Jekyll and his deranged alternate personality Mr. Hyde, and Dr. Jack Griffin, aka The Invisible Man. These monsters lie in wait as they bide their time to seek vengeance against guests for opening the Catacombs becoming more enraged as guests navigate the twisted tunnels of the underground labyrinth.

Universal Monsters Halloween Horror Nights Review

This haunted house had great attention to detail with these “legacy” monsters that will be appreciated by fans of these famous creatures whether captured in cinema or literature. As someone who studied some of those texts in graduate school, it was a fun experience for me. But for others who may want to prioritize the other top houses, this could be a skip if you do not have an Express Pass.

Evil Dead Rise

Halloween Horror Nights

This haunted house brings guests to New Line Cinema’s return to the iconic horror franchise Evil Dead with the 2023 film Evil Dead Rise. The attention to detail in this house closely mirrors the film and follows the story of the single mother possessed by the evil demon who in turn possesses members of her family. The house takes guests through the story from the beginning when she is first possessed int he elevator of her apartment building which you walk past in the queue.

Evil Dead Rise

Evil Dead Rise Halloween Horror Nights Review

This is one of the scarier houses from the lineup and closely follows the film. Yo

Halloween Horror Nights Universal

u will enjoy the house more if you have seen the film, which is pretty scary on its own, so you understand the setting you experience in the house. If you haven't seen the film, the house will still be enjoyable but the plot will be harder to grasp and it will just seem like a lot of random jump scares. For those who have enjoyed the film, you will love this house as it perfectly captures the suspense of the film and has a large amount of jumpscares and grotesque moments.

Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America

Halloween Universal

This house will include the most terrifying ghosts and creatures from Latin American folklore. The folklore folk tales are all spooky in nature and feature everything from ghostly creatures to witches. The house focuses on three main creatures: the blood-sucking Tlahuelpuchi, owl-faced witch La Lechuza and bone-ripping El Silbón.

Monstruos Halloween Horror Nights Review

This house took me by surprise because I did not expect it to be as scary as it was! This house easily “got me” the most with the jump scares and it was far more grotesque than many of the other houses. At times you are passing through intestines and animal carcasses plus the smells in the house are similar to cooking meat. This was one house that I was walking quickly through! But that all adds up to a great haunted house so in that case, this may be one you want to do if you want to be scared! It was definitely not for the faint-hearted, I was ready for a hug from Mickey Mouse at Disneyland's Halloween after this one.

Holidayz in Hell

Halloween Horror Night Universal

This combination of holidays takes visitors on a petrifying trip through a series of psychotic seasonal celebrations. Holidays featured in this house include St. Patrick's Day, Easter, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. This house created monstrous creatures for each holiday setting the scene and adding a terrifying twist to more common innocent figures like the Easter Bunny.

Holidayz in Hell Halloween Horror Nights Review

This is a more comedic haunted house although it still comes with its jump scares! The creativity that went into this house is impressive and we especially enjoyed the Thanksgiving meal setting where the Turkey gets his revenge. This is a house with some of the strongest smells, especially in the Thanksgiving scene, so be warned!

2023 Terror Tram Review

Terror Tram Universal

The following details are from last year's Halloween Horror Nights Terror Tram:

This year's Terror Tram will bring guests to the famous Universal backlot in the middle of an insect uprising led by the devious Larry Larva whose goal is to exterminate humans from the Earth. You will get off the Terror Tram in the same area of the backlot where you pass the plane crash on the Studio Tour. This is one of the coolest parts of the experience to be able to walk up close to these movie sets. But be prepared to do a lot of walking as you are essentially doing most of the usual Studio Tour area on foot instead of on the tram!

The Terror Tram also includes the chance to walk through the Jupiter Claim set from Nope where guests encounter The Tethered from Us resulting in an epic crossover from two of director Jordan Peele’s popular films. This was our favorite part of the Terror Tram which was a continuation of the previous year, I hope this becomes a permanent addition to the experience as the Tethered from Us makes for such good scare actors.

As for the Exterminatorz storyline, this mainly consisted of walking through man-sized bugs with chainsaws or bug-covered buildings or people who had fallen prey to Larry Larva. This was more of a scare zone experience although it did include one building walk-through. Overall, the Jordan Peele focused area was more impressive than this storyline but it's still worth it to walk the Studio Tour on foot.

Halloween Horror Nights

There is also a photo op available with Norman Bates from the film Psycho. This was a really cool surprise as we walked the Terror Tram and was one of our favorite photo ops from the event.

Universal just shared a new look at the highly anticipated Fast & Furious coaster opening next year! This will not only be Universal Studios Hollywood's first major high-speed outdoor coaster but also the fastest roller coaster at any of Universal's theme parks.

Now, we have more details about this impressive upcoming coaster, including an animatic video, a new look at the ride vehicle, and new concept art. Keep reading for more details!

Fast & Furious Coaster NEW Details Revealed

universal studios hollywood entrance area with sign

Universal has shared that when Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift opens in 2026, it will be the fastest roller coaster in the Universal Destinations & Experiences portfolio, reaching speeds of 72 MPH! This is also faster than any Disney theme park attraction around the world.

The coaster will feature 360-degree rotation of the individual ride vehicles to simulate the sensation of drifting cars. It will take riders to these high speeds along 4,100 feet of track, constructed with sound reduction technology. The track will reach over sections of the park, including the escalator connecting the Upper and Lower lots. Construction is currently underway for the ride.

See the newly revealed concept art of the coaster below. This new ride is going to be a great addition to the park, which currently doesn't have a major thrill ride unless you count The Mummy!

The entrance to this new ride will be on the Upper Lot, where the queue will be in an “expansive garage-like structure.”

There will be four ride vehicles, designed to look like the iconic cars from the films. The ride vehicle that is modeled after Dominic Toretto’s 1970 Dodge Charger is currently on display at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Universal Hollywood Annual Passes

Secret Life of Pets attraction

There are four different types of passes – California Neighbor Pass, Silver Annual Pass, Gold Annual Pass, and Platinum Annual Pass. Each Annual Pass will grant you admission into the theme park for an entire year, while the seasonal pass will grant you admission for 9 months.

California Neighbor Pass

While the name may be confusing, the California Neighbor Pass is NOT for California residents only. This pass is available to everyone!

The California Neighbor Pass is the cheapest of all the Universal Studios Hollywood passes. The price of this pass is $189 at the Front Gate. However, if you purchase your pass online, you will save $10, making your California Neighbor pass only $179. After purchasing your pass, you will select a date for your first visit.

While the other passes are Annual Passes and allow you entrance into the theme park for an entire year, the California Neighbor Pass is a seasonal pass. With this pass, you will have access to the theme park for 9 months. Blackout Dates do apply to this pass and reservations may be required for return visits. Even so, after your first visit, you will have over 150 days for return visits. Over 25 of those days are weekend days!

Since the California Neighbor Pass is the cheapest, as expected, it does come with less benefits than the Universal Studios Hollywood Annual Passes. Even so, it does come with some perks!

California Neighbor Pass Benefits

  • Invitations to Special Events
  • Discounts on General Admission for Friends and Family
  • Discounts on ticketed special events like Halloween Horror Nights
  • 10-15% discounts at participating CityWalk locations

Silver Annual Pass

Bowser portrait in Bowser's Castle

Going up the list, the next pass is the first Annual Pass for Universal Studios Hollywood. This pass is the Silver Annual Pass. This pass can be purchased for $229 at the Front Gate. Again, if you make your purchase only, you can save $10, taking the price down to $219.

The Silver Annual Pass is also the first pass to offer FlexPay! FlexPay gives you the option to make low monthly payments towards the total of your Annual Pass as opposed to making the complete payment at purchase. For this pass, payments are $6.37 each month!

After making your purchase, you will select the date of your first visit. As a Silver Annual Passholder, you will have Blackout Dates that you will need to schedule around. Reservations may also be required for your return visits. Even with Blackout Dates, when you have a Silver Annual Pass, you will have over 275 days for return visits, with over 50 of those days being weekends.

Since this pass is an annual pass, you will have an entire year (12 months) to benefit from it. There are also additional benefits that come with the purchase of a Universal Studios Hollywood Silver Annual Pass.

Silver Annual Pass Benefits

  • Invitations to Special Events
  • Discounts on General Admission for Friends and Family
  • Discounted on ticketed special events like Halloween Horror Nights
  • 10-15% discounts at participating CityWalk locations

Gold Annual Pass

King Kong CityWalk sign

Next up is the Gold Annual Pass. Gold Annual Passes cost $309 at the Front Gate. However, by purchasing it online, you can save $10 and get this pass for only $299. FlexPay options are also available for this pass! By opting to use FlexPay, you can purchase your Gold Annual Pass for $10.91 per month.

Once you’ve purchased your pass, you can select a date for your first visit. With a Gold Annual Pass, you will also have Blackout Dates to plan around. You also may be required to make reservations for your return visits. As a Gold Annual Passholder, you will still have many dates to choose from for your return visits, even with the Blackout Dates. With your pass, you will have over 325 days to plan return visits. Over 75 of these days are weekends. Since this is an annual pass, you will have a full 12 months to enjoy Universal Studios Hollywood.

The Gold Annual Pass is the first annual pass to have additional benefits. Let’s take a look!

Gold Annual Pass Benefits

  • 15% off in-park food, beverages, and merchandise
  • Free General Parking  (Entry until 6:00pm)
  • Invitations to Special Events
  • Discounts on General Admission for Friends and Family
  • Discounts on special ticket events like Halloween Horror Nights
  • 10-15% discounts at participating CityWalk locations

Platinum Annual Pass

Super Nintendo World

The final annual pass option is the Platinum Annual Pass. This pass is the most expensive, but also the most beneficial. The Platinum Annual Pass costs $609 at the Front Gate. Again, by purchasing your Universal Studios Hollywood Annual Pass online, you can save $10. By doing so, the price of your Platinum Annual Pass will go down to $599. FlexPay is available again for this pass. When using FlexPay, you can purchase your Platinum Annual Pass for $28.19 each month.

After completing your purchase, you’ll be able to select the date of your visit. With a Platinum Annual Pass, you’ll have an entire year to enjoy Universal Studios Hollywood. The best part? There are NO Universal Studios Hollywood block out dates with a Platinum Annual Pass. That means that you don’t have a select number of return visits. With a Platinum Annual Pass, your schedule is completely clear and you can plan your return visits for however many days you’d like, whenever you’d like! While there are no Universal Studios Hollywood block out dates to plan around, you may need to make reservations for your visits.

Since this is the highest level of Annual Pass for Universal Studios Hollywood, it does come with the most perks. Let’s take a look at everything that you get as a Platinum Annual Passholder at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Bringing the Wicked characters to the Universal theme parks has been a slam dunk due to the popularity of this film and the characters of Elphaba and Glinda.

Recently, guests could only meet Elphaba and Glinda during a ticketed event but soon all guests will be able to meet them during regular theme park hours for a limited time.

Universal Studios Hollywood Extending Wicked Character Interactions

Universal Studios Hollywood just announced a major summer event that will include some popular character interactions that originally made their debut during Universal Fan Fest nights. This includes the opportunity for guests to meet Elphaba and Glinda at the theme park's existing Wicked themed photo op adjacent to the main entrance.

This character interaction is available during regular theme park hours and not a part of a ticketed event. This is exciting news for those visiting Universal Studios Hollywood this summer especially since Universal Orlando has had their own Wicked character experience since last year which you can see in the above Instagram post from Super Enthused.

Universal Mega Movie Summer will take place June 13 through August 10, 2025 at Universal Studios Hollywood and will also includes updates to one of Universal's Jurassic World ride plus photo ops and characters from Jaws, Back to the Future, and How to Train Your Dragon.

One of Universal Studios Hollywood's most nostalgic attractions is receiving new ride updates as part of a new summer event coming to the theme park.

In honor of the upcoming film Jurassic World Rebirth, updates will be coming to the Jurassic World- The Ride including new animatronics and a major new side effect.

Jurassic World- The Ride Receiving New Sound Effect

Inspired by the new Jurassic World Rebirth film, a new sound effect will be added to Jurassic World- The Ride.

The iconic 84-foot water drop at the ride's finale will feature a the “menacing roar” of a Mosasaurus as guests plummet down. The Mosasaurus, a water dinosaur, will have an intimidating presence in the upcoming film based on what we've seen in movie trailers.

New Animatronic Dinosaurs Being Added to Jurassic World

Jurassic Cafe

The new roaring sound effect will also be joined by four new Spitter dinosaurs along with more water geysers that will erupt to shower guests with water!

This attraction has received many updates the last five years with the start of its transformation from Jurassic Park: The Ride to the new theme of Jurassic World: The Ride in 2019. It was updated again in 2021 to add the Indominus Rex animatronic above the big drop.

It sounds like Jurassic World-The Ride is about to get a lot more wet which would put it more in line with the Jurassic Park River Adventure at Universal Orlando which in my experience can get you soaked even before the big drop. Half the reason for this is the number of water geysers and dinosaurs that squirt water at you along the way.

These new changes will debut alongside the Universal Mega Movie Event which will take place June 13 through August 10, 2025 at Universal Studios Hollywood. There is no word yet on any closures for Jurassic World-The Ride ahead of these updates.

Universal Mega Movie Summer will take place June 13 through August 10, 2025 at Universal Studios Hollywood. Universal is introducing character interactions that were part of their new after hours events, Universal Fan Fest nights, during this new summer event. This is a great push from Universal Studios Hollywood to bring more experiences into the park. But the event isn't just character interactions, there will also be new ride updates debuting as part of the event along with a first look at the new Fast and Furious rollercoaster.

Universal Mega Movie Summer will also include new exclusive merchandise, new menu items and themed eating areas, and fun photo ops honoring some of their most favorite films.

Construction is still moving along at a fast pace for Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, the new rollercoaster opening in 2026. Guests can enjoy a sneak peek of one of the ride vehicles during this summer event.

The Dodge Charger ride vehicle is designed to look like Dominic Toretto’s 1970 Dodge Charger will be parked in the Universal Plaza for guests to view.

Jurassic Park Ride Updates and Character Experiences

Jurassic World-The Ride will receive a new sound effect for the finale with the addition of a “menacing roar” from a Mosasaurus. The ride will also receive four new Spitter dinosaurs and water geysers.

The all-new dinosaur from Jurassic World Rebirth will join Blue the Velociraptor, Juliet the Triceratops and Baby Tango for character interactions. These lifelike dinosaurs will interact with guests alongside the debut of a new adventure character also inspired by the film. There will also be a new “larger-than-life” photo op of a Spinosaurus dinosaur that welcome guests to step into a scene from the film.

A new scavenger hunt game featuring Compy will also be available along with new menu items at Jurassic Cafe and Isla Nubar.

Jaws

To honor the 50th Golden Anniversary of Jaws, Universal Studios Hollywood is bringing back its iconic hanging shark photo op we saw last year on the Studio Tour anniversary. Universal will also be introducing new meet and greet characters, Captain Quint and Chief Brody.

This is going to be a massive photo op as the figure will be 730-pounds at nearly 6′ in height, measuring 24’ in length and 8’ in width.

There will be a nearby food cart offering Toothless and Light Fury cookies and a Toothless popcorn bucket.

Universal CityWalk Hollywood Food Items and Merchandise

Universal Studios Hollywood is changing up their Express Pass and offering a new Express Select add-on which gives access to only a few popular rides at a much lower cost than the general Express Pass.

This new Express Pass option offers flexibility for guests looking to prioritize skip the line access for certain rides and save some money doing it. Let's get into which rides are included and the cost.

Universal Express Select Add-On Option

Universal Express Pass
Photo via Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood is offering a new Express Select add-on option that starts at $35 per person. This gives guests access to the Express Line to skip the regular line for Jurassic World, the Studio Tour, and WaterWorld.

This isn't the first time that Universal Studios Hollywood has offered varying add-on options. For example, guests can also purchase an add-on ticket which guarantees one hour early access to Super Nintendo World before the park opens. This ticket access used to also include one-time Express Pass access to the Studio Tour but appears this has been removed with the addition of this new Express Select add-on option.

Why These Three Rides?

Studio Tour sign at Universal Studios Hollwood

I would not say that these three rides are the most popular in the park. In fact, WaterWorld isn't even a ride but a popular stage show. It's one of our favorite shows at Universal Studios Hollywood but you don't need to rely on Express Pass to access it. The arena is huge and allows for plenty of seating.

The access to Jurassic World is helpful since this attraction can get long lines, especially in the summer months. As for the Studio Tour, this is the key attraction that is unique to the park. This attraction is a must do and is at the top of our best rides ranking of Universal Studios Hollywood.

If I were to pick the top three most popular rides though, I would lean towards creating my own Universal Express Select that included Harry Potter & The Forbidden Journey, Secret Life of Pets, and Mario Cart: Bowser's Challenge. But if Universal did that, what would the motivation be to buy the regular Express Pass? They need to keep their top hit rides reserved for that higher charge. So instead, they did a sampling of two of their most popular rides, but not the most popular of them all, and added in the fun WaterWorld show to help regulate the Express Pass line access.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend this option when you can easily get access to WaterWorld and Studio Tour. Even if the lines for the Studio Tour are long, it is such a fast loading tram style attraction that it doesn't take as long as a typical attraction. So in the end, you are mainly paying for access for just Jurassic World which can easily be ridden during the first two hours of park opening when we suggest rope dropping the Lower Lot if you want to prioritize those rides.

Generally, I hope this means we'll see Universal start to play around with offering select attractions for Express Pass. Mario Kart as a stand alone attraction to buy access to, similar to how Lightning Lane Single Pass works at Disneyland, would be a great seller.

Universal Studios Hollywood ticket prices have greatly increased since the studio tram tour first opened many years ago. Now, Universal is one of the most popular Southern California theme park destinations, offering immersive themed lands like the new SUPER NINTENDO WORLD and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, engaging shows and entertainment, and fun dining and shopping options.

After Universal Studios Hollywood having recently raised ticket prices, many are wondering how much Universal Studios Hollywood tickets currently cost. Universal Studios Hollywood Ticket Prices

Universal Studios Hollywood Ticket Prices

Universal Studios Hollywood offers a few different ticket options, with prices depending on which type you are purchasing and your length of trip. For one/two day tickets, you can choose from 1-Day General Admission, Universal Express, VIP Experience, and 2-Day General Admission.

Unlike Disneyland tickets (if you're buying directly from Disney), Universal Studios Hollywood tickets are cheaper to buy online than at the gate. However, online savings may not apply to same-day purchases of 1-Day General Admission. Buying online is always the more reliable option given that the park may sometimes reach capacity and tickets won't be available at the booths. Note that you will still find the lowest prices on discount Universal Studios Hollywood tickets from external partners.

Online ticket prices vary by day and season, which we will discuss more below. Pricing is also different for adults and children, with adults considered 10+ years old, children considered ages 3-9 years old, and children ages 2 years and under not requiring a ticket.

There are also four options for Universal Studios Hollywood annual passes (the California Neighbor Pass, Silver Annual Pass, Gold Annual Pass, and Platinum Annual Pass) which we will discuss the benefits and pricing of below.

1-Day Universal Studios Hollywood Ticket Prices

Universal Studios Hollywood ticket prices tiers

1-Day General Admission will allow you access to Universal Studios Hollywood for one day, valid on the selected date only. Online prices for 1-Day Universal Studios Hollywood tickets vary by date. Adult pricing currently ranges from $109 at the lowest tier to $154 for the highest tier.

Note: The Universal Studios Hollywood website shifts its pricing tiers, so the table below may not be exactly what you see on the website. Though there is the potential to see a shift, the range listed above of the lowest and highest prices will still be the same.

You can see the online pricing for Universal Studios Hollywood 1-Day General Admission below:

Tier 3$134$128
Tier 4$139$133
Tier 5$144$138
Tier 6$149$143

The higher pricing tiers are clustered more around peak times of the year like holidays (with December 19-31 all the highest tier, for example), and prices tend to be higher on weekends even if they mostly clustered around a lower tier during the week.

Universal Express

Additional Universal Studios Hollywood Costs Beyond Tickets to Consider

Universal Studios Hollywood ticket prices additional costs

While Universal Studios Hollywood ticket prices are a big part of your trip’s expenses, there are also other day-to-day costs to consider during your vacation. These include hotels, parking, dining, souvenirs, and more. Some of these are larger expenses, while others are smaller ones that can add up quickly.

Parking: If you are driving from out of town or renting a car and driving it to the parks, the cost of theme park parking is something to consider. See all parking prices below:

  • General Parking Before 5pm – $35
  • General Parking After 5pm – $10
  • Preferred Parking Before 5pm – $55
  • Preferred Parking After 5pm – $20
  • Front Gate Parking – $75
  • RV or Oversized Vehicle Parking – $45

Dining: There is a variety of quick-service and table-service restaurants at Universal Studios Hollywood. See our guide to dining at Universal CityWalk for a breakdown of the options offered there! To save on this area of your trip, we recommend eating breakfast outside of the park, finding cheap but filling meals, bringing smaller snacks and a refillable water bottle, or splitting portions between members of your party. See our full guide on saving money at Universal Studios Hollywood for more tips!

Hotels: Where you will stay is another cost consideration for your Universal Studios Hollywood trip. There is a selection of both budget-friendly and luxury options near Universal Studios Hollywood with options nearby the park including The Garland, The Holiday Inn Express North Hollywood, Springhill Suites by Marriott Burbank Downtown, and more. Consider saving money by bundling your hotel and tickets—you can book the best prices for Universal Studios Hollywood packages here. If you're planning on visiting both Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood and are basing your trip in Anaheim, see the best hotels near Disneyland that we would recommend.

Souvenirs: The cost of souvenirs can add up quickly if you aren't careful! We recommend having some measures in place to combat overspending. You can always buy souvenirs ahead of time at a cheaper price, establish a souvenir budget for the parks, or only purchase souvenirs on the last day of your trip to avoid any heat-of-the-moment purchases. See everything you need to know about Universal Harry Potter wands in our guide! Also, make sure you are prepared with essential items in your bag so you don't need to make any unnecessary purchases that will be more expensive at the park. You can see our full guide to the Universal Studios Hollywood bag policy for everything you need to know about what you can and can't bring.

The first ever theme park Wizarding World of Harry Potter popcorn bucket is set to debut soon at Universal Studios Hollywood.

This new popcorn bucket is themed after Hermione Granger's Time-Turner featured in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. This is one of the coolest popcorn buckets I've ever seen at Universal! This new Harry Potter popcorn bucket will debut during Universal Fan Fest nights which takes place on select nights April 25 through May 18, 2025 at Universal Studios Hollywood.

This popcorn bucket will also come to Universal Orlando at some point next month and is already available at Universal Beijing Resort.
